When Healing Finally Feels Like Softness

Gretchen Wood Lakshmi • May 3, 2026

We're rising into a time where there's a deeper understanding, that:

  • We all come to healing in our own ways. Through our own experiences. For our own reasons.

No two healing journeys look the same and not all healing leads to the same places.

Lately, my own healing journey has been shifting...

Out of the more painful aspects of healing where I was observing and realigning my own personal shortcomings, unhealthy decisions, and painful patterns of behavior...

Into the kind of healing that gently invites me to soften.

  • To slow down.
  • To notice what actually feels good.
  • To create a life that feels safe enough to settle into.

I'm sharing a small glimpse of that with you today. Not as a blueprint for how healing 'should' look…

  • But as a possibility for one of the many ways that healing can look.

*** I'm also sharing some free digital content that you can download below. ***

The Pain of Healing

For a long time, I lived with a kind of internal bracing.

  • Even in calm moments, my body didn’t fully believe it was safe to rest.

There was always a subtle readiness underneath everything; a sense of needing to stay alert… just in case.

And when you’ve lived that way long enough, softness doesn’t feel natural at first.

It feels unfamiliar.

Uncomfortable even.

I went through a time when healing felt like uncomfortable effort for me.

  • Like something I had to work toward.
  • Earn.
  • Figure out.

There’s a truth in that part of the process and others have also experienced it in their own healing.

This work holds relevance and importance, so if you're still in this stage of your healing, please continue to nurture yourself through it.

I've been working towards personal freedom and healing by digging in and doing the hard, messy work of self-reflection and true behavioral changes for years.

  • I assumed that my healing would ALWAYS look like this to some degree or another.

But, something has been shifting for me lately.

Not all at once, over time, in small, quiet ways. Moments where...

  • I notice the warmth of sunlight and actually feel it.
  • I sit a little longer instead of rushing to the next thing.
  • I take my time and observe the finer details.

My body isn’t trying to solve anything… it's just existing.

I realized that my rational, left brain was keeping me focused on the fiery energy of doing the healing work. And, don't get me wrong, that method took me a long way.

But, after years of personal evolution, my creative, right brain now draws me towards the softer, more fluid energy of being in healing energy.

And summertime is my favorite time to settle deeply into this kind of energy.

My Soft Summer

When I really think about it...

I've been building towards this summer for years.

  • Not because I created some impossible To-Do List or expected a perfectly curated, magical experience.

But because I cultivated a pathway towards feeling what I wanted to feel and embodying it deeply within myself through daily intention.

The images I’ve been drawn to lately reflect this shift.

  • Soft textures.
  • Ocean air.
  • Warm light.

Simple, grounded moments that don’t ask anything of me.

It started as something aesthetic… but the more I sat with it, the more I realized:

This isn’t just what I want things to look like.

  • It’s what I wanted my life to feel like.

I created a desktop wallpaper to immerse myself in the energy of what I want to feel this summer.

And maybe that’s something worth exploring for yourself too. Not what healing is “supposed” to look like.

  • But what it feels like when your body begins to settle.

If your life could feel like an environment… what would it feel like?

  • Would it be quiet?
  • Open?
  • Warm?
  • Grounded?
  • Would there be space for you inside of it?

I’m not building this all at once. I’m finding it in small moments:

  • Sitting next to a window with the sunlight pouring in.
  • Going outside without needing a reason.
  • Creating spaces that feel calm instead of overstimulating.
  • Choosing softness, even in small ways.

  • I know these moments are subtle. But they’re teaching my body something new.

You don’t have to brace here.

You can stay.

I don’t think healing always looks like effort anymore.

Sometimes, it looks like creating a life that feels different.

  • Softer. Slower. More yours.

That's what I’m stepping into right now.

A soft summer.

A quieter rhythm.

A life that feels like something I can actually create and lean into right now.

And, if that resonates with you, you’re always allowed to find your own version of that.

In your own way.

In your own time.

Wishing you deeper healing,

Gretchen
